Seffner Christian’s Saunders commits to Olivet Nazarene

May 15, 2012 by Bill Ward

Seffner Christian senior Garrett Saunders has accepted a dual sports scholarship for football and baseball from Olivet Nazarene University in Kankakee, Illinois, Crusaders athletic director Andy Holmes announced.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Saunders has led Seffner Christian’s football team in receptions and touchdowns the last two seasons but has also seen duty at tailback, tight end, wide receiver, safety and punter. He also competed in last season’s Hillsborough County All-Star game at Raymond James Stadium.

At ONU, an NAIA school, Saunders is being recruited as a tight end and H-back. In baseball, Saunders was named to the All-Bay Conference team four straight years and, in 2011, was named Class 1A-District 13 Player of the Year 2011 and was first team all-state in 1A. He will be joining the Tigers pitching staff, which has rolled up 16 consecutive winning seasons.

Saunders received offers from 34 different schools to play football, baseball or both. He made visits to Ohio State, Samford and Stetson before deciding on ONU. Saunders is the first football player to land a football scholarship from Seffner Christian’s two-year-old football program and the first Crusaders player in school history to sign a dual sport scholarship, Holmes said.

SCA's Saunders headed for Olivet Nazarene

Mon. May 14, 2012 | Joey Knight

Seffner Christian two-sport standout Garrett Saunders will become the first Crusader to sign a football scholarship when he signs Friday with Olivet Nazarene University, his father announced.

Johnny Saunders -- also the Crusaders baseball coach -- said his son (6-foot-3, 225 pounds) will sign a baseball/football deal with the NAIA school in Bourbonnais, Ill. Between the two sports and some academic-based aid, "basically it's about a 98-percent scholarship," his dad said.

"He's been blessed," Johnny Saunders added.

The 2-year-old Crusader football program's career leader in receptions (30) and touchdown catches (nine), Saunders also is a four-time all-Bay Conference selection in baseball. He enjoyed his best overall baseball season in 2011, when he went 7-2 with a 0.71 ERA and hit .353 with 22 RBI.

Seffner Christian senior third baseman Landon Allensworth has signed a letter of intent with Shorter University in Rome, Ga., Crusaders coach Johnny Saunders announced Friday.

Shorter had been an NAIA school but recently applied and was admitted to the NCAA to play next season at the Division II level. Saunders says the Shorter Hawks Baseball was recently ranked #15 in the US and is currently playing in the NAIA national tournament in Azusa, Calif., today taking on Arizona Christian.

Allensworth has been a four-year starter for the Crusaders and one of the squad’s most productive hitters.

“Landon has played a huge part in SCA baseball the last 4 years,” Saunders said. “His hard work and exceptional play has elevated our program. Shorter will be gaining a quality student athlete.”
